Air pollution

Sir,—Christchurch residents burning coal in open fires have paid a dear price for the, material that goes up their chimneys and out into our air. Without doubt, therefore, these residents have at least as great a right to keep their smoke as to pass it on to me. This fact has tempted me to plug their chimneys. But the reason why I ought not do this is worth considering. Plugging their chimneys' could be culpable homicide. A coal fire produces toxic gases sufficient to kill a houseful of people. What conclusion should coal users draw from this fact?—Yours, etc., PHILIP CATTON. June 26, 1981.
