Liberty bid

NZPA London Just after midnight, the prisoner slipped out of the pen- — and then set free 56 other inmates.

But before they could escape, a patrolling policeman saw them and with eight colleagues recaptured the lot: one monkey, 12 lizards, 20 mice, and 24 birds. The monkey, named Champ, was behind the mass break-out at a pet store, in the London suburb of Hackney.

He bit through the wire of his cage then swung around the shop store unlatching the other cages one by one. Constable Steve Vorley spotted what was going on when he flashed his torch through the darkened window.

Eight reinforcements arrived and found the place in chaos, with birds flying around in circles, mice and lizards scampering over the floor. The law used their helmets and fishing nets to trap the escapees, smashing several empty fish tanks and spilling packets of pet food'as they did so. -

One police constable, a woman, remained outside. “I think it was because of the mice,” said a police spokesman.
