Concern about L.P.G. statement
The member of Parliament for Lyttelton, Mrs Ann Hercus, yesterday expressed concern about a statement by the Minister of Energy (Mr Birch) that liquid petroleum gas (L.P.G.) would be off-loaded in the Lyttelton inner harbour.
Mrs Hercus said that if the proposed Commission of Inquiry into the L.P.G. pipeline route started from* a fixed premise that L.P.G. must be off-loaded in the inner harbour, there was no point in having a commission. “The whole point of such an inquiry is surely to consider options,” she said. "Options must surely include where the L.P.G. is to be offloaded.
“Yet the Minister seems to be saying that that decision is already made. “The people of Lvttelton have already had their normal town and country planning rights removed. Now .it seems that they are being offered a Commission of Inquiry with a crucial decision apparently already made behind closed doors.
"Surely the Minister must see that any Commission of Inquiry must have wide and all-embracing terms of reference so that all options can be fairly considered by the community.
"Nothing less will satisfy me as the member of Parliament for Lyttelton,” Mrs Hercus said.
