Labour’s Northland plan ‘a bribe’

PA Wellington The Labour Party's pledge of development funds for Northland is “just another election-year bribe." says the Minister of Forests (Mr V. S. Young). The party's policy, aimed at stimulating the regions timber industry, was announced by its leader (Mr Rowling). "As if he were some bornagain economist. Mr Rowling seems to have discovered the potential of Northland's forest resources," Mr Young said. The Government recognised the need for a proper and orderly development of

the forestry resources in Northland and in particular the need for an adequate infrastructure to handle the increased timber that would come on stream. Mr Young said. "To this end, a special working party of the Forestry Conference has been working on assessing the prospective reading investment. This will be reported back to the final session of the conference in September, after which the Forestry Council will bring down its recommendations and guidelines for a total exotic forestry policy for all of New Zealand."
