Rubella immunisation benefit extended

PA Wellington The Government had extended the rubella immunisation benefit'so that females over 16 can get free immunisation, said the Minister of Health (Mr Gair) at the National Hearing Association’s conference in Dunedin on Saturday. The benefit was usually restricted to children under 16. An amendment to the Social Security Act will be introduced so that the new provision will be in place in August or early September. The main age-group of the

women concerned is between 19 and 29 — about 300,000 in total. It is estimated about 10 per cent of these would require to be immunised. ■Mr Gair also announced that the immunisation benefit. paid to doctors, would be increased from $2.25 to $4 from September 1, at an estimated additional cost of $283,000 in 1981 and $566,000 in a full year. He said the department aimed to immunise 98 per cent of Form I girls, and that this level would be reached this year. Last year, 93.4 per cent were immunised.
