Opinion polls
Sir,—The silly season is here again. O.P.s (opinion polls) show now that Bob is beautiful, then Bill is booming, but then Bruce is burgeoning. And the O.P.s have watertight reasons. What short memories we have. A few years ago I culled a quote from your paper. “Almost his last words before leaving for home about 1 a.m. came when someone mentioned public opinion polls. It would do a great deal more good for the country if the money spent on public opinion polls was given to the Intellectually Handicapped Children Society.” The speaker: the late Norman Kirk. The date: the night of his landslide win of the election, in 1972. For 1981, could we now read “Year of the Disabled” in his last sentence?—Yours, etc.,
M. LYONS. June 22, 1981.
