Divorce rate up

The number of divorces in New Zealand has almost doubled in 10 years. Last year 20.78 decrees absolute were granted per 10,000 of mean population. In 1970 the figure was 11.12 per cent.

The figures are contained in the Statistics Department’s billetin for May, 1981.

Of the 7426 divorce petitions filed in 1980, 52.2 per cent were filed by wives and 47.8 per cent' by husbands.

The main grounds for divorce were separation by agreement (55.8 per cent), followed by separation by court order (18.8 per cent), and adultery (13.2 per cent).
