‘World of Apu’
“The World of Apu” (India, 1958. black and white, 106 min.), the third part of Satyajit Ray's famous “Pather Panchali” trilogy and a self-contained story, will be shown by the Canterbury Film Society at Room Al, Ham, next Tuesday at 8 pm: and at the' Museum Theatre at 7.30 p.m. the following night. “Pather Panchali,” the first part of the saga, told the story of a family among the poor people of Benares and the struggle they had to live; the second, “Aparajito.” was the story of the grimly determined fight for educa-
tion on the part of the son, Apu. "The World of Apu” largely concerns Apu's marriage, his life with his new bride and their return to' Calcutta. Satyajit Ray has a rare command of his medium and these three films were something of a monumental achievement and have certainly earned their creator a place in cinema history. Apu is played by Soumitra Chatterji and the music is by Ravi Shankar. “Three Colour Separation Studies,” a 13-minute Australian experimental art film, will also be shown.
