Society valuable asset to small retailers
As an independent and developing retail business, Wilson Neill, Ltd, quickly realised the value of the Retail Traders Society. The society was incorporated in 1963, specifically to aid small, independent retailers. The idea was the conception of Mr Brian Keane, the manager of an electrical and furniture retailing business in Dunedin. He believed if smaller businesses were to survive the-price war, initiated by the larger chain stores, there must'be access to the same bulk buying privileges-. Eventually the society ex-
panded towards marketing and merchandising as a unit under the store name R.T.S. To aid in the streamlining of the whole operation, the Retail Traders Society negotiates competitive price importing for its retail members, handles exports for manufacturers and designs its own products. The society has an annual turnover of S6OM and has nearly 400 members. Its head office is in Pakuranga, Auckland, and is operated by a staff of 32 and governed by a board of seven directors, who are elected .from the members.
