Fire-fighting display on Saturday
Demonstrations and displays of ’ fire-fighting methods and equipment will be given from 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Central Fire Station in aid of Telethon. Such public demonstrations are rare events. Although the firemen may not charge people to watch the displays, they hope to be able to raise a lot of money for Telethon by taking collections among spectators. The two-hour display will include mock rescues and fire-fighting. Rescues will be made from hook ladders on window sills, on the turntable ladder from the training tower, from a crashed car, and from a real fire in a building. Different fire extinguishers for different types of fires will be demonstrated. Probably the most dramatic event of the day will be the rescue and fire-fighting demonstration involving the burning building, one that is used frequently for training firemen. The display is being organised by the' “Blue Watch” division of the Central Fire Station but firemen from other watches will probably take part and appliances
from suburban stations will be on stand-by in case of a fire call-out. In the case of a big fire, the display would have to be postponed. Another display which will be held on Saturday for Telethon is being organised by the Christchurch Radio Fliers, who will ’ fly their radio-controlled model aero-
planes at the Pedigrew property. Rangiora, from 9.30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Donations for Telethon will be collected as admission charges.
