Iraq calls for sanctions
NZPA Beirut ' Having failed to gain ‘American support for United Nations sanctions against Israel for. its raid on the
Bagdad nuclear facility. Iraq yesterday asked Arab States to use the oil weapon and -impose .other . economic sanctions against , the United States in retaliation, for its •support ..of Israel. :•< .?.
The Speaker of Iraq's Parliament (Mr Naim Haddad) proposed eight resolutions before an emergency meeting of Arab parliamentarians in Bagdad that included representatives of Algeria. Jordan. Kuwait. Lebanon. Morocco. Tunisia. North and South Yemen, and
the Palestine Liberation Organisation. ‘ The Iraq News Agency said the resolution concerning sanctions against the. United Slates called for: “Confronting the United Slates partialisfs to the Zionist enemy and its unlimited political, military, economic and information support for the enemy by imposing sanctions and tough measures against the United States through the use of the oil weapon and the withdrawal of Arab funds from American banks as well as the liquidation of its domination and various interests in- the Arab region and the refusal to receive its envoys and delegations.”
The tough anti-American proposal contrasted. sharply with Iraq's stand in the United Nations, last week, where the Foreign: Minister (Mr Saadoun H'ammadij and the American delegate. Jeane Kirkpatrick,,-agreed on, a’ Security Council resolution ■‘strongly condemning” Israel for its June 7 attack. America had said it, would veto any sanctions, move against Israel. ",
Both Iraq and Israel criticised the resolution. .Bagdad said it did not go far enough, and Tel Aviv said it did not even-handedly address Israel’s claim that the nuclear facility was being used to produce an atomic bomb for use against the Jewish State.
