Bid to ban cars at tips fails
A proposal to ban private cars from Christchurch city's refuse stations has been rejected by the Metropolitan Refuse Committee, at least in the meantime. The Redwood Action Committee suggested that local authorities collect all domestic refuse and that private cars be banned from delivering rubbish to refuse stations or tips. The committee decided that rubbish collection was the responsibility of the con- ■ tributing/councils. The proposal would extend the refuse committee’s responsibilities. The committee chairman, Cr H. A. Clark, said that this could be an option for the future. A report, adopted by the
committee, said that a “full collection” by local authorities might involve increased costs, although it could be a long-term goal for the committee.
The present annual cost of local body rubbish collection, was about $1.5 million a year, the report'.said. A full collection would probably increase the charge on rates during its first four years but there could be/reductions as the new scheme replaced the Old. r,-.-:!'.'-■ , ■;
The Redwood Action Corn-/ mittee said in its proposal that a full collection service would be more convenient for people; reduce litter, reduce traffic on roads to the refuse;','/stations; make re-source-recovery easier, and provide more jobs.
