Friesian conference ‘heartened’

PA Hamilton More than 300 delegates to the New Zealand Friesian Cattle Conference in Hamilton on Monday were heartened by Ruakura research findings on their breed. A Ruakura scientist. Dr Jock McMillan, told the breeders that Friesians when crossed with Jerseys had shown a considerable productive advantage over straight Jerseys, in a set of trials. The trials, over 31 herds, had proved that the two top breeds, when crossed milked for 10 days longer than purebred Jerseys and had a 23kg production advantage. The trials were done by the Dairy Board and the Ministry of Agriculture. The delegates heard papers from Dr McMillan and Allan Bryant of Ruakura. Yesterday they visited farms in the Waikato area and other points of interest including the Kinleith paper mill and the famous Ferdon Jersey stud.
