‘Women exposed to rises’
Wellington reporter The economy and unemployment are the two issues dominating the concern of women, according to the Minister in charge of Women's Affairs (Mr McLay). Whether rightly or wrongly, he said, society was still so organised that even when both spouses worked it was the woman who was responsible for household management. Thus it was the woman who was being exposed on a weekly, if not a daily, basis to rises in the cost of basic food and clothing items.
which reflected so strongly in the consumer price index. Equally, even if she were not an employed wage > • earner, a woman was con- ■ cerned with the employment ~ situation — not merely as it might affect her or her spouse, but also because of a o - deep concern about the effect of unemployment on her children, the future workforce. The only long-term solu- ' tion to unemployment was' by the creation of new permanent jobs, said Mr McLay. . Those jobs could only conie from growth.
