Hogben House
Sir,—l support those who deplore the closing of Hogben House. This national, not just local, centre for educational inservice training has, since its establishment 10 years ago, been developed into a national asset of high reputation. This was achieved by the close support of the southern regional officers of the Department of Education, and by the outstanding wardenship of Mr B. J. Wilson for five of the 10 years. Admittedly, its South Island location makes it less economically viable than the longer-established .Lopdell House in Auckland, but must the mainland continue to drift further from the national scene for the sake of marginal savings? The education system of New Zealand is a national
system; its local and regional courses run by teachers and inspectors are good, but the continuing existence of national centres in both islands is highly desirable. As the original warden of Hogben House, I am saddened by the strange reasoning of those responsible for its closing.— Yours, etc., E. S. MACFARLANE. June 22, 1981.
