Haast Pass open

The Haast Pass highway was reopened at midday yesterday after Ministry of Works and Development staff shovelled grit over an ice-covered section. The road had been blocked by snow and ice since last Friday, but became passable after a thaw. The snow was not cleared by the staff because of a dispute . about an isolation allowance. However, the workers placed grit on icy patches so that motorists would not be endangered.

The thaw meant that the road was negotiable, but dangerous, and the spreading of grit did not mean the end of the dispute, said the regional secretary of the. Public Service Association, Mr J. M. McKenzie. If fresh snow .fell, staff would not elear.it, he said.
