Hotel to screen feature films

■The Marine Tavern, in Sumner, has a customer who has "access to films,” so it hopes to show a film every week, as long as the supply holds.

One of the licensees. Mr N. G. Northcott, said that the decision to offer films resulted from a conversation with a customer who said he had .access to a- number of titles;

The first showing will be on July 2 in a bar which'can seat more than 100. The film ■will be “Butch • Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” and'customers will pay $1 for what Mr Northcott, believes will be a “first” for a New Zealand hotel.

He- could not say what

other titles might be shown in the weeks to come. "He (the . customer) is looking after that, and the screen, and the projector. We just do the advertising and provide the venue.”

The hotel is allowed to, show films because of the provisions within the Cinematograph Films Amendment Act, which came, into force on January 1. , Masters Independent Cinemas has a theatre in Sumner, and its manager (Mr H. L. Masters) doubted whether the hotel showings > would reduce his patronage, “f do not think people, are interested in w'atching movies as well as drinking . and smoking.” he said.
