Murder charge remand

PA New Plymouth Paul Julian, aged 26, was remanded in custody without plea for a further week on. a charge of murder when 'he appeared in the District Court at New Plymouth yesterday. Julian, a labourer, accused of murdering Jeanette Anne Butler and Allan James

Schrider at Inglewood on or about June 9, appeared handcuffed to a policeman. Sergeant T. McGreevy applied for a remand for two weeks under Section 47A, 28, of the Criminal Justice Act, which provides for psychiatric examination and assessment. The remand was opposed by counsel. Mr J. MacDonald, who asked that

• should such a remand be granted an order be made that no drugs be used, and that any statements made to the psychiatrist not be made available to the police. Judge Dalmer said he was not sure whether he had the power to lay down conditions, and suggested the remand be for a week to allow senior defence counsel to take fuller instructions.
