Vote on burial

PA Wellington Serving members of the Armed Forces who die may be buried in former servicemen's cemeteries as a result of a vote at the Returned Services' Association conference. The cemeteries are controlled by the Internal Affairs Department and a departmental spokesman said after the vote that there would be no need to change the law. The Government would have to amend its policy on the cemeteries, however. The Dominion council had earlier considered a remit permitting burial in the cemeteries of personnel who died overseas or while on service in New Zealand. The council decided to admit all service personnel without qualification. The Dominion R.S.A. president. Mr Douglas Leuchars, said after the vote that the issue was a sensitive one and the vote would be implemented very carefully by the executive committee.
