Eruption at Taupo

PA Hamilton An eruption on the outskirts of Taupo early on Saturday sent a cloud of steam about 300 metres into the air. The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research geothermal co-ordinator at Taupo. Mr T. Mahon, said that the eruptioin. on a Lands and Survey block on Centennial Drive, was not seen by anyone but must have been "fairly violent.” It was heard by several people and scattered debris over a wide area, he said. It was similar to an eruption about 150 metres from the same spot three years ago. There could be three craters over an area of about 100 metres by 50 metres, but it was difficult to see because of the steam. Gushes of muddy water were being sent three or four metres into the air.

Hydrothermal eruptions could be triggered by earthquakes, but he did not think that the eruption on Saturday was related to the earthquake in Matamata on Thursday.
