Edmondson upsets
NZPA-Reuter Bristol Mark Edmondson, the former Australian Open champion, won the inaugural Lambert and Butler £30,000 ($NZ69.426) Tennis Grand Prix at Bristol yesterday. The 26-year-old Edmondson outplayed and . largely outfought the American Roscoe Tanner, winning 6-3. 5-7, 6-4 to take the £6500 ($NZ15,029) first prize after a 90-minute final. Tanner, seeded No. 8 at Wimbledon, faces • a firstround match on the opening day against fellow American,
Bruce Manson, and clearly needs to improve on yesterday's performance. ( Tanner said afterwards that he was not too unhappy, with his own game. “I don’t i think I played that badly but all credit to Mark; he was simply in great form.” In the doubles final, the New Zealander, Russell > Simpson, successfully partnered the American, Billy Martin, to victory over the South African, Johan Kriek, and the American, Jbhn Austin, winning 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
