Chch teams struggle
By DAVID LEGGAT Christchurch's three Rothmans Soccer League teams advanced to the fourth round of the Adidas Chatham Cup with wins on Saturday — but two of them took a difficult route. Rangers needed penalties to beat the struggling Dunedin Hertz League side. Green Island; Woolston W.M.C. drew level with Dunedin Technical three minutes from the end, before scoring twice in extra time; but Christchurch Mogal United was too strong, for Western. The fourth Christchurch team which qualified for the third round, New Brighton, battled valiantly against the national league leader, Dunedin City, before going down, 2-0, in Dunedin. Pat Berry scored the first, but it did not come until 19 minutes from the end. Michael Glubb added the second soon after.' Rangers were very unimpressive against a Green Island team which also offered little of substance at Rangers Park. The match was dreary and forgettable. with Rangers being unable to take control of the play. Both teams had a handful of scoring chances, but neither capitalised fully, and at the end of extrq time the score was locked at 0-0. Rangers then received a further scare when their first penalty, taken by Marcel Verweij, was saved by Green Island's goal-keeper, Jeff Barnes. However, Barnes was ruled to have moved early, and after Verweij scored with his second attempt, Gerard Kemp, Paul Dabner, John Souter and Michael Fulham, made no mistake. A Green Island player missed his penalty and Rangers scraped in, 5-4. Woolston looked decidedly lethargic for much of its match against Dunedin Technical at English Park. Indeed, it paid the penalty when Barry White lobbed a header over Woolston's goal-keeper, Peter Moot, from a right wing cross seven minutes after half-time to give Technical the lead. Graham Dacombe then scored for Woolston, but it was disallowed for off-side. Robbie Larter and Dacombe squandered further chances, while White could have made sure of a Technical win, but just failed to get his foot to a ball flicked on. by Bill Chisholm in front of an open goal. With time running out, Woolston, which had lacked imagination and purpose against a determined, bustling Technical team, managed to force extra time when Keith Francis turned a Dacombe cross in at the near post. Further goals by Larter in the
ninety-fourth minute and Colin Currie ten minutes from the end, assured Woolston of a comfortable winning margin of 3-1. United had a convincing 4-0 win over Western, but the regional league side did more than enough to keep United's defence busy. Pat Sharkey opened the scoring shortly after half-time and Bobby Almond effectively made sure of the win with a fine solo goal after sixty minutes, running half the length of the field. David Jackson scored the third, when he got behind the Western defence to finish off some good work by lain Marshall. Peter Bebnie wrapped up the scoring three minutes from the end, from the penalty spot. Hertz League Nomads United moved two points clear in the Hertz League competition with a 1-0 win over Cashmere-Wanderers in the top-of-the-tablc battle at Somerfield Park. Before the match the teams were joint leaders in the league, and the loss is Cashmere's first for the season. Stephen Haworth scored the goal from a free-kick 20 minutes from the end of a game which produced few clear scoring chances. ' Technical scored four second half goals to beat Timaru City, 40, in Timaru. Brian Geoghegan scored three times, including one penalty, while Peter Shea added the fourth. Shamrock beat Northern Hearts, 2-0, at Riccarton Domain. Brian Hendry .and Michael Cowan scored the goals. HERTZ LEAGUE
