S. Rowe wins elite gymnastics
Samantha Rowe, a New Zealand Games representative and a member of the Alpha club in Christchurch, won the elite grade at the Ascot Avonhcad invitational gymnastic meeting at Cowles Stadium at the week-end. Miss Rowe performed consistently to beat her club-mate. Leeanne Mcaclem, by two points in a grade that was cut by half by the withdrawal of two other gymnasts. Fiona Martin and Lisa Aldamland, both from the Christchurch School of Gymnastics, had the grade one competition to themselves after the only other entry, Kirsty Gillespie, was forced to withdraw injured after the vault exercise on Friday evening. Miss Martin's total for her eight exercises — four compulsory and four voluntary — was fractionally higher than Miss Rowe's, but a higher degree of difficulty is expected from elite grade gymnasts.
