Australian ship for research
The Australian Government has announced that it will commission a specialist ship for research and supply work in the Antarctic within the next year to support that country’s continuing scientific investigation of the area. The vessel is expected to be of about 6000 tonnes and will be equipped with helicopters, laboratories. a crew of about 70, and will have the capacity to act as an icebreaker. Meanwhile the Canadian Government has announced that it has abandoned plans for the construction of a nuclearpowered icebreaker in favour of a smaller, conventionallypowered ship which would be employed primarily in Arctic waters. On the oilier side of the world the Baltiisky plant in Leningrad has started work on the hull of a new Soviet icebreaker, already given the name Russia, which, .informed sources say, will be deployed extensively in Antarctic waters, ARRIVALS Saturday Nil.
