hearing ' was told that appropriate commercial zoning would ensure that expansion could go ahead. . “The present supermarket on our Redcliffs site is overtrading. and the site is capable of much more turnover,” said Mr B. E. H. Hope, the Foodstuffs retail operation's controller. Some customers in the area were already going to Linwood because the Redcliffs marketwas too small. The company wanted ad- ‘ joining properties in Augusta Street and Main Road to come under a residential car-parking zone. The United Council and Mr F. S.. Robinson said the zoii-' ing on that side of the road
should be restricted to avoid traffic and pedestrian problems caused by commercial development on both sides of a busy street.
From a traffic viewpoint, the supermarket was already on the wrong side of the road, Mr Robinson said. Land already owned by Foodstuffs should be adequate to provide enough space and parking for even an expanded supermarket;
City Council planners said that land zoned commercial in the scheme should be sufficient. even ■if another 1800 people were added to the shopping catchment, which now'contained about 1886 people between McCormacks Bay and Moncks Bay.
