Superb goal
NZPA-Reuter Paris' The Liverpool full-back Alan Kennedy claimed a place in soccer's hall of fame when he scored the winning goal against Real Madrid, of Spain, in the European Cup final in Paris on Wednesday night. The rugged Kennedy, one of the Liverpool side’s lesserknown names, hardly bears comparison with such legendary European greats as Puskas, Di Stefano, Cruyff or Mueller. But his stunning eighty-second-minute goal, which took the European Cup to Liverpool for the third time, guaranteed Kennedy a place in European Cup history. The game appeared to be heading for 30 minutes’ extra time when another Kennedy — the mid-field man, Ray —
sent a throw-in towards the Real Madrid penalty area. There appeared to be little danger until Alan Kennedy burst forward and a defender, Garcia Cortes, completely missed what looked like ah easy clearance. Kennedy unleashed a superb shot from an acute angle past Real’s goalkeeper, Agustin, and ran on until, with arms aloft, he stood face-to-face with thousands of delirious Liverpool fans in the Parc Des Princes stadium. Kennedy’s only other goal this season was in the 1-1 draw against West Ham in the English League Cup final. When Liverpool won the replay, his goal was soon forgotten but. that is unlikely to be the case this time.
