Kart titles in Chch

The New Zealand road race championships and grand prix for karting will be held at the Ruapuna raceway tomorrow.

They represent the first national titles to be decided in Christchurch for two years. Over 60 entries have been received for the events.

The road race championships are contested over three races, and three different classes of kart will take part.

Auckland’s Dennis Bradley will be favourite for the Superkart class, following his win in the South Island road championships a fortnight ago. John Crawford, Bruce O’Malley and Robin Wilkinson will be his toughest challengers. The 100 cu cm Stock class

should produce close racing, with four Christchurch men, Murray Davies, Keith Hooper. Robin Heron and Gavin Hawker, having strong prospects. Avon Hyde will be the man to beat in the up to 150 cu cm class. Hyde already has the South Island road championship and national sprint championship titles behind him in recent weeks. On Sunday, the South Island will attempt to beat the North in the annual contest for the first time in four years, at the Carrs Road raceway.

There will be competition in five classes, and 10 races will be held to find the winner of the inter-island series.
