New head of council

Parliamentary reporter

A former principal of Christchurch . Bovs' High School. Mr C. F. S‘ Caldwell, has been appointed chairman of the Social Development Council. The appointment was announced yesterday by the Minister of Social Welfare (Mr Gair).

Mr Caldwell, who is ProChancellor of the University of Canterbury, will replace Dr J. L. ’ Robson, who has

held the post for six years.

The council consists of nine private members, selected for their personal qualities and experience in the social welfare field, and representatives of the departments of Health. Education, and Social Welfare.

The purpose of the council is to examine issues of social importance and to give independent advice to the Government. The work of the council is essentially long-

term and as such it plays a role which no other body in the social welfare field fulfils.

In recent years the council has conducted exercises in family policy, urban and regional development, social research, and community development. Other areas with which the council is concerned include the social implications of changes in technology, violence, and social values.
