Japanese seamen swept away
PA Wellington Two Japanese seamen are dead after freak waves swept them off the decks of their trawler and into the sea, 28 miles off the Three Kings Islands. Crew from the fishing boat Seiryo Maru No. 35 and five other boats working in the area searched for five days but could not find the body of Chikara Sasaki, aged 30. The second man, an engineer, Tok Kato Lokuo, aged 49, was hauled up in the nets soon after the accident but died from injuries suffered when he was struck by the propeller. Wharf police boarded the Seiryo Maru when she came alongside Queens Wharf in Wellington soon after 10 a.m. yesterday. But after speaking with the boat’s skipper, Detective Sergeant A. H. Hart said the double fatality was clearly accidental and warranted no further police investigation. He said the mishap took place at 2 a.m. on May 21 when the vessel was 28 miles off the Three Kings and outside New Zealand territorial waters.
The ship struck rough weather and was hit by two waves which crashed over both sides of the bow, flinging the two men into the sea.
