Returns processed ‘within six weeks’
Wage and salary earners can expect to wait less than six weeks for their tax returns to be processed by the Inland Revenue Department, said the assistant district commissioner (Mr A. J. Delore) yesterday. The department is processing about 8000 returns a week, and will have handled 112.000 returns before the end of July. Mr Delore said the standard of returns was not as good as last year and many had to be sent back for clarification and further information. "It is probably the new' format we are using this year that is causing this drop in standard." Mr Delore said.
Returns which require clarification will be delayed by another week, plus the time taken by the taxpayers to send in the new information. . Mr Delore said there were exceptions to the basic rule that any salary and wage earner receiving less than $11,500 solely from employment would not. have to furnish a return. One exception was a person on a special tax code. For instance, a retired worker who receives two superannuation payments may have to pay extra monej' even though his total earnings are less than $11,500.
