Engineer volunteers
Thailand is unknown territory to Mr Peter O’Regan of Christchurch, but next month he will go there as a Red Cross volunteer.
Mr O’Regan, aged 23, an Air New Zealand aircraft engineer, will work as a mechanic on relief project vehicles. The International Red Cross sought volunteers for the job throughout the world. Mr O’Regan received a telephone call about two weeks ago from the maintenance engineer in Thailand, telling him he was wanted. He was brought up on his parent’s farm on the West Coast, and has never been to Thailand. He said he did not know anything about the country, apart from what he had seen on a map.
After his three months in Thailand, Mr O’Regan will probably return to his job in New Zealand.
