Jail for assault
Two Ashburton men, convicted a fortnight ago on charges of assault, were sentenced to four months imprisonment when they appeared in. the District Court at Ashburton yesterday. Junior Ratu Hemi, unemployed, aged 19, and George Hori. Hemi, unemployed, aged' 24, had earlier pleaded not guiltv to the charges which arose from an incident at a tavern in which two
police officers were assaulted. Judge Frampton said yesterday that tne defendants played “a substantial part” in what a brutal and sustained attack on two police officers acting in the course of their duty. A custodial sentence was the only applicable penalty because of the severity of the assault, and because police officers were involved.
