Jail for assault

Two Ashburton men, convicted a fortnight ago on charges of assault, were sentenced to four months imprisonment when they appeared in. the District Court at Ashburton yesterday. police officers were assaulted. Judge Frampton said yesterday that tne defendants played “a substantial part” in what a brutal and sustained attack on two police officers acting in the course of their duty. A custodial sentence was the only applicable penalty because of the severity of the assault, and because police officers were involved.
