Buying troubles
Sir,—On Monday I bought three items at 9c each. The assistant wrote down the addition of 9c plus 9c, and then added another 9c, to get 37c as an answer. On Tuesday I went to the biggest city bookstore to get some typing paper and despite protests bordering on hysteria that all I wanted was typing paper, was shown boxes of expensive carbon paper for about 10 frustrating minutes.
On Friday I picked up an order for 10 bandsaw blades that were to be 1.44 metres in circumference and $36 later proved to be 1.044 metres instead. What’s happening? Are the subtelties of the new'maths eluding me? — Yours, etc., R. FRANCIS NAYLOR. May 23, 1981.
