Public appeal for old people’s club
An appeal to raise $300,000 for the Fairhaven' Residential Club will be launched on June 2. . The club, being built by the Christchurch Methodist Central Mission, is “a new concept of sheltered housing for the elderly.” according to Mr J. A. Stewart, the mission’s appeals organiser. The project will cost $1.3 million. The mission is committed to raising $300,000 by public appeal and $200,000 from its own resources. A subsidy of $BOO,OOO has been given by the Government because, Mr Stewart said, it had been recognised as a
pilot scheme for housing for the elderly in New Zealand. A stone-laying ceremony for the club was held on May 2. Mr Stewart said that residents at the club would be able to retain independence and be part of a community. "Community life, independence and decision-making will be encouraged in the form of committees.comprising of residents who will be responsible for the managing of day-to-day affairs, such as arranging cleaning of common areas, and organising recreational activities and facilities,” said Mr Stewart.
