Wildlife management

Sir,—"To remind and inform the general public of the need for wildlife conservation.” With these words in 1970 the head of the Wildlife Service introduced the first number of “Wildlife — A Review,” covering 1969. Mr G. R. Williams noted “the difficulty of getting a materialistic society to see that conservation 's essential.” He referred also to the 1968 report of the Commission of Inquiry into the Organisation of Wildlife Management, and Research. Ralph Adams, the present director, in his foreword to the new eleventh number of “Wildlife” covering 1980, remarks that yet “another inquiry into wildlife administration has come and gone” with all its attendant effects on morale. Indeed the persistent dedication and enthusiasm of Wildlife Division staff after decades of departmental squabbling over their bones is as remarkable and to be applauded as it is irresponsible and to be deplored the way the same departments ignore or eject wildlife recommendations: whenever it suits them.— Yours, etc.,

ERIC BENNETT. May 17, 1981.
