Trade-in service on faulty blankets

The Central Canterbury Electric Power Board will investigate providing a trade-in service for faulty electric blankets. Of the 194 tested in April, 27 were defective. Over the last 12 months the board has tested 800 blankets. Those that do not pass the test are returned to the owners with a red label attached; stating that' the blanket should not be used. The deputy general manager of the C.C.E.P.B. (Mr P. D. Rutledge) has told a board meeting that there was no doubt some consumers used the blankets, even though

they had been found to be faulty. Mr C. V. White, the board’s chairman, said that it was not the board’s responsibility, but it had some duty to stop the consumer from using a defective blanket. Mr Rutledge said that it might be possible to take the old blankets as a trade-in on a new unit. The switch and the cord from the old blanket could be reused. To help cater for the increasing number of consumers coming in to have their blankets tested under the free service, the board has approved the installation of a $2OOO test rack for electric blankets.
