Single lamb seller opposed
PA Wellington The Meat Exporters’ Council has opposed a proposal for a single New Zealand lamb marketing company. The council's chairman, Mr Peter Norman, said yesterday that undue prominence had been given to a paper by a Victoria University marketing professor, Professor T. D. C. Cullwick, at the Lincoln College Farmers’ conference on Tuesday. Professor Cullwick proposed a company with equity participation by the Meat Board and exporters. It would be responsible for the marketing of lamb worldwide through the appointment of agents for specific markets and could also establish subsidiary companies or act as the sole agent for a selected company. Mr Norman said there were several major and minor importers in the United Kingdom. “If you put it in the hands of one monolithic importer you would run into problems with distribution and the individual requirements of supermarkets and shops. I’m against one monolithic seller, too.” Mr Norman said.
