/ A ■ 16-year-old • youth crashed a stolen car after a high-speed chase on the West Coast yesterday. The chase, by police and Ministry ■ of Transport patroF cars, began in Grey- . mouth yesterday afternoon when the youth left a ser- . vice station without paying ■■■ for petrol. - , n ‘ The car;had ’been converted in-Christchurch .and ~ was bearing plates removed from a“ vehicle taken from Dunedin. The, Greymouth police warned-police stations to the south and arrangements ’.were made for two roadblocks. - But the wanted car
passed, both points- before the:, road-blocks could be . , set up! . • . The chase was taken up . north of Hokitika by a - police patrol car and a ’ Ministry' of Transport car and continued . through Hokitika, Kaniere, and Ross at high speed., - • As the chase continued - towards Harihari 'another;' road-block was set up at : the Wanganui River.: bridge., - The 16-year-old driver ,of the wanted car. careered off the road as he tried toavoid the waiting police. ’• The youth was arrested t'and will appear before-a District Court judge. at Greymouth this morning.
