‘Wedge’ accusation

NZPA Peking China yesterday reported fresh fighting on the border with Vietnam and accused Hanoi of trying to drive a wedge between Peking and the Association of South-East Asian Nations. The Xinhua News Agency said Vietnamese troops on Sunday killed five Chinese border guards and on Monday shot one guard and wounded another. The Communist Party newspaper “People’s Daily” accused Vietnam of trying to use the. alleged “China

threat” to frighten the five A.S.E.A.N. countries — land, Malaysia, the Philip-; pines, Indonesia and Singa-7 pore — and to alienate Pek-'s ing from the grouping with ! which it is on friendly, terms.' It also accused Hanoi of trying to make A.S.E.A.N. . abandon its campaign for an international conference On Kampuchea in favour of a smaller regional meeting, as proposed by the three Indochina countries. This calls for a meeting attended only by A.S.E.A.N. members and Vietnam, Kampuchea .and Laos.
