Retail tax rejected
Parliamentary reporter
Delegates to the Labour Party Conference in Wellington yesterday voted overwhelmingly against a retail tax on products and services.
This tax is one the Government has been considering in proposed adjustments to the tax system. The defeated remit asked that the retail tax apply on all items except food and housing to provide the Government with an income source after reductions were made to income tax. The conference also rejected a remit seeking to make life insurance and medical insurance policis non tax-deductible. Also lost was a remit encouraging a high level of savings by giving some industries high priority investment status, and removing tax on the invested income.
The conference sought reinstatement of tax-deductible charity status for Corso, and a waiver of payments on all mortgages in the event of sickness or loss of job of the mortgagor, subject to presentation of a medical certificate.
