Opposition to closer ties

Delegates to the Labour Party’s conference yester day voted in favour of shelving closer economic co-operation with Australia. In an amendment to a remit on trade and industry they decided that no further steps would be taken to develop a closer relationship and that neither the General Agreement on Tariffs, and Trade nor N.A.F.T.A. should be relaxed.

Delegates inserted the provision opposing a closer relationship into a remit which referred in comparatively vague terms to a need for a re-exam-ination of New Zealand’s customs and tariffs systems.
