Gang laws ‘bluff’

PA Auckland Tougher laws to help the police deal with gangs were last evening described by the president of the Maori Wardens’ Association, Mr Peter Walden, as “an open door to harassment.”

Stiffer laws and penalties for gang members were among the many recommendations of the Government committee on gangs, the report of which was released yesterday.

Mr Walden said that the proposal of tougher association laws was “just another bluff”

“These laws have never worked,” he said. “It is just an open door for the pinpricking and harassment that already goes on in some cases. "If a gang member walks

down the road and talks to three others is he to be arrested?” The committee had not paid sufficient attention to the key issues of the home environment and the education system, Mr Walden said.
