Youth sentenced to detention

A youth who appeared for sentence on one charge of converting a car, wilfully damaging a telephone box, and with driving while disqualified, was sentenced to residential periodic detention for six months when he appeared before Judge McAloon in the . District Court yesterday. The Judge told Bruce Stuart Cowan, aged 17, who had admitted the offences, that his behaviour had been that of a vandal.. He warned Cowan of thd dire consequences of any further offending. The Court heard earlier that Cowan had converted a $l7OO car which he had then used for a joy ride during which he hit a telephone box in Wainoni, completely destroying it. The Judge made no order for compensation for the destroyed telephone box, saying that the Post Office could pursue this in a civil jurisdiction. • RECEIVING OFFENCE A man convicted of receiving two leather jackets, valued at $4OO, and three bottles of rum, was fined $l5O. Roland Andrew Shirtcliffe, f aged 26, a trainee manager, admitted the offence which took place on April 30. Sergeant C. J. Shannahan said the complainant’s house was burgled by three men, one of whom was the brother of the defendant.l

Property valued at $1671? which included two leather jackets and the bottles of rum, was taken. The brother had contacted the defendant, showed him the jackets, which the latter had paid $lO each for. He had been given the bottles of rum. All this property had been recovered. Counsel (Mr P. J. Egden) said the offence was an isolated, spur of the moment event, and his client had succumbed to the temptation of his brother who had owned him back-rent. BURGLARY CHARGES Four men charged with breaking and entering the Shortland Street premises of Vinell Shoes, Ltd, were all remanded on bail to May 19. No pleas were entered by Robert John Walker, aged 20, unemployed: Keith Leslie Bradshaw, aged 27, a welder, Gregory Paul Butler, aged 20, a serviceman; Mark Selwyn Anderson, aged 20, unemployed; and Karl Anthony Smith, aged 21. The burglary is alleged to have occurred on Monday, ■ May 11.
