Seventh title to Miss Looms

New Zealand's number four woman table tennis player. Debbie Looms (Marlborough), won her seventh consecutive Marlborough Open championship title at Blenheim last week-end.

She demolished the promising Nelson player, Carolyn Jary. 21-10, 21-4, 21-8, in the final. Miss Jary, a capable attacking player, had’ no answer to Miss Looms spin and vicious loop drives. The winner of the men’s section was the 41-year-old John Mears (Marlborough), better known in Marlborough as a competent bowls player, but who has been one of Marlborough's leading table tennis players for the last ten years, without ever having succeeded in taking the open title. Mears had an easy ride through to the final, where’ he struck a tough customer in the veteran, Nigel Perry (Marlborough), using a pimpled Barna bat. Mears won the first two sets, but Perry fought back and had Mears down. 13-7, in the fourth set after taking the third, 21-8, but after pausing to wipe his spectacles won only two more points to lose his chance of taking the title.

Mears, playing with anti-spin Yasaka rubber, admitted after the match that he had almost given up the idea of persisting with his defensive play against Perry, and if the match had gone to the fifth set he would have changed bats and begun to attack.
