Ewes, store lambs sell well

The prime cattle market remained unchanged' but prime old ewes and store lambs had a sound sale at the Addington market yesterday.

Interest in prime cattle was restricted. Prime lambs and two-tooths sold reasonably well but old ewes improved by about 50c. The market for store lambs was particular!}’ strong considering the time of the year. Prime lambs Only a few top-quality lambs were included in the yarding of 973 (1384 last week). However the demand from trade and freezing interests was strong enough to ensure that values remained the same as last week s. The values were: Light lambs: $14.70 to $16.50. Medium lambs: $16.60 to $18.70. Heavy lambs: $lB.BO to $20.00, with odd sales to $23. Shorn lambs: to $22.30.

Prime sheep The old ewes in the yarding of 1963 prime sheep (2236 last week) improved in value by 50c. The demand for these was much stronger than in recent sales. Some sold up to $13.10 but the bulk was between $9.80 and $10.90 Two-tooths were over supplied and harder to sell although values remained the same. The values were:

Best two-tooth wethers: $lB to $19.40. with odd sales to $20.50.

Medium two-tooth wethers: $15.60 to $17.80. Two-tooth ewes: $15.30 to $19.10. Best old ewes: $11.20 to $12.70 with odd sales to $13.10. Medium old ewes: $lO to $ll.lO. Light old ewes: down to $7.30.

Power (Hawarden). 55 at $ll to $12.50. Prime cattle Most of the 480 prime cattle yarded (470 last week) sold at rates similar to last Tuesday's. Lighter steers and heifers were again harder to quit. The best market was for the best steers and a few well grown heifers. Not as many boner cows were offered yesterday. The best steer price was $494 for a ■ Simmental cross from Hoatten Bros (Elgin). A Friesian heifer from R. and J. McDrury (Ladbrooks) made $374 and a Friesian cow from M. S. Dulieu (Greenpark) realised $316. Steers and heifers to 220 kg sold for between 119 c and 124 c a kilogram. between 220 kg and 270 kg for 118 c to 122 c, and more than 270 kg to 129 c.

The values were:. Prime heavy steers: $395 to $457, with odd sales to $494.

Prime medium steers: $355 to $335.

Prime light steers: $290 to $350. Prime heavy heifers: $270 to $290. with odd sales to $374. Prime medium heifers: $240 to $262. Prime light heifers: $206 to $239. Prime heavy cows: $290 to $316. Dairy cattle Some exceptionally high prices were paid for the best of the 14 dairy cows entered (one last week). The’ top price was $450 for a Friesian cow. Other cows and heifers ranged from $212 to $405.

Store sheep . Strong interest from the freezing trade helped to improve the market for the 4812 store lambs offered (3862 last week). Values improved by up to $1 although quality was seldom very good. The 1601 ewes offered (1981 last week) were harder to sell. Sales of store sheep included.—J. A. Fat pigs Although the quality of the fatpig yarding improved the sale had little buoyancy. Most pigs sold at rates similar to last week's. Choppers had a weak sale and only the best exceeded $lOO. Many store choppers ranged from $35 to $45. The values were: Light pork: $65 to $75. Heavy pork and light bacon: $77 to $B5. Medium bacon: $95 to $lOO. Heavy bacon: $lO2 to $ll2. Light choppers: $35 to $5O. Heavy choppers: $lOO to $ll5.

Store pigs The store-pig vardtng was of high quality. All types of pigs sold well. The buying power was strong throughout the sale especially for the larger pens of weaners and stores. Poorer quality pigs were harder to sell and values for these cased by $5.

The values were: Small weaners: $l2 to $lB. Good weaners: $25 to $35. Slips and small stores: $37 to $45. Good stores: $4B to $55.
