Lipinsky’s socialism

Sir,—M. Creel asserts, and I do not accept, that “a ruling class can arise only on a basis of the private ownership of the means of production ...” I agree that this is valid in the context of capitalism and in any “mixed economy” where capitalism persists. But progress into socialism by a continuous revolutionary process may encounter hazards. A centralised bureaucratic structure may function contrary to the direction of socialist democracy. Lipinsky recognises this error. Can a socialist democracy, needing ideological guidance from its historically created Party, remain truly “classless”? A valid concept of class extends beyond the production relationship of Marx and Engels.—Yours, etc.,

K. FEA. May 8, 1981.
