Chinese labour

Sir, — Sir James Fletcher has suggested Chinese workers could be imported to build New Zealand’s big industrial projects; it would be cheaper he says (“The Press,” May 9). People should now have no doubts about where Fletchers’ priorities lie. Anyone relying on Fletchers and their smelter-’ type industries to solve New Zealand’s economic and employment problems should think again. Even at best a smelter would provide only 950 jobs, with 2000 during construction. This is a long way from wiping out unemployment of nearly 70,000 and even further if imported labour is used in the construction phase. And Fletchers is the firm that Mr Muldoon believes will keep an eye on New Zealand’s interests in the smelter partnership. Alusuisse, one of the overseas partners in the venture which also runs a smelter in Iceland, is currently being investigated for tax evasion by the Icelandic Government. It won’t happen here, said Mr Muldoon; Fletchers won’t allow it. — Yours, etc., D. L. JACKSON. May 9, 1981.
