Second arrest in bank robbery
Two Christchurch detectives flew to Wellington on Saturday to bring back the second man arrested after the $16,500 robbery of the Bank of New Zealand’s Woolston agency last Tuesday. The other man, aged 27, was arrested in Christchurch early on Saturday morning after a team of detectives, led by Detective Inspector N. J. Stokes, had wori.ed through the night. -He was remanded in custody to today at a brief special sitting of the District Court.
The man arrested in Wellington is aged 22. Both will appear in the District Court this morning charged with the robbery. Mr Stokes said that the police had recovered sums of money, but not the full $16,505 stolen, from “various locations” around Christchurch.
In Wellington, detectives had recovered travellers’ cheques. Yesterday a team of police were searching an area of bush near Maruia Springs for items which were possibly connected with the hold-up, said Mr Stokes.
He said thaj the police were not looking for any other person in connection with the robbery.
