Hutchison hits both goals in drawn final

NZPA-Reuter London tommy Hutchison scored both goals in the one hundredth English Football Association Cup final between Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley yesterday, but still failed to finish on the winning side.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw, the Scottish inter- : national, Hutchison, scoring ■ a for City in the first half and ■ deflecting the ball into his ; own goal eight minutes be- ; fore the end of normal time. | No goals were scored in 30 j minutes of extra time, and , the final will be replayed, ; again at Wembley, on Friday ’ morning (N.Z. time). j Suffocating marking and ■ vicious tackling, primarily , by City, dashed the hopes of those who hoped the occasion ' would produce an open, freeflowing contest. City led deservedly through Hutchison’s first goal after 30 minutes, but the London team mounted a late revival after sending on 20-year-old Garry Brooke in place of the out-of-touch Ricardo Villa 20 minutes from time.

Within 12 minutes the move paid off handsomely.

Osvaldo Aruiles was badly fouled by Gerry Gow as he bore down on the penalty area. From a short free-kick Glenn Hoddle hit a firm drive which spun off the luckless Hutchison into the goal. , City had been the first into its stride, and won five corners before its rival mounted a dangerous raid. But midway through the first half it was Tottenham which came within an ace of scoring when the City goalkeeper, Joe Corrigan, clutched desperately to keep out a header from Graham Roberts. On the half hour, just as Tottenham seemed to have regained the initiative, its defence failed crucially. City developed a routine attack along the right, from which Ray Ranson crossed towards goal. Defenders concentrated on the City strikers, allowing the 33-

year-old Hutchison to place a precise header just ins’ide the right post. Roberts, earlier the victim of a clash of heads, was booked for a clumsy foul as Tottenham struggled to break out of the City strangehold. Later, the City defender, Tommy Caton, and the Tottenham striker, Garth Crooks, who had maintained a titanic battle, were both cautioned in separate incidents. City’s tireless chasing suggested that it must tire first, but apart from a brief spell when Tottenham enjoyed the boost of the late equaliser, it looked clearly the fitter team. The City defenders, based on the lanky Caton, were the collective stars of the match. They allowed Crooks and Steve Archibald, who had scored 45 goals between them this season, only the

rarest and briefest sights of goal. The relatively inexperienced Tottenham defence closed ranks impressively after the shock of Hutchison’s goal, and Roberts, though kicked in the mouth and losing several teeth, vied with his captain, Steve Perryman, as the outstanding man of his team. The ponderous Villa was predictably outsmarted by the no-nonsense tackling of the Manchester men, but Ardiles remained elusive until weariness took over in the final minutes. Brooke, until lamed in extra time, added a mobility and fire-power to Tottenham which it had badly missed. Television New Zealand will decide today whether to screen live coverage of the replay. The replay would screen at 6.30 a.m. on Friday (N.Z. time).
