Linwood’s unbeaten run this season was in jeopardy when David Perkins was forced to leave the field with an injury 20 minutes from full-time in its game with Addington. Both substitutes were already in action and Linwood was left one man short. At that stage Linwood had a useful 17-11 lead, but matters became more ominous soon afterwards when the Addington threequarters, Chris Towart, capitalised on an over-lap to reduce the margin to three points. However, Linwood responded well to the challenge and its hardworking prop, Dougal Adams, claimed his second try to restore the earlier points advantage. Towart then evened up the numbers by having himself sent to the sin-bin. and Linwood eventually held on without too much anxiety. There was little between the two sides generally. Had Blair Corkran done better than one success from eight goal-kick attempts Addington might have won. But Linwood deserved credit for overcoming a difficult situation. Keith Henry and Paul McCone returned to the Linwood premier

back-line to compensate for the losses of Wallv Wilson and David Campbell to the South Island side, and the absences of the Hudson brothers. Robin and Lewis. Both made valuable contributions, Henry as a solid tradesman at scrum-half, and McCone with penetrating runs in midfield.
Indeed, McCone needed only 12 minutes to get back into the tryscoring groove, running intelligently off his forwards to cancel out an early try to Steve McCann for Addington. McCone would have had another later, but for a magnificent covering tackle by Towart. The real strength of the Linwood team lay with its front-row. Paul Truscott gained his second consecutive “man of the match” award, Rex Dalzell again showed his ability to create breaks, and Adams was perhaps the best of them all with his sheer determination in the tight exchanges. Jack Milford, a second-rower whose running might be compared with that of the former Kiwi centre, Olsen Filipaina, continues to catch the eye in the Addington XIII. It was Milford who was responsible for Corkran's try, and he was a formidable extension of Grant Findlay’s astute ball distribution. Towart and McCann were the best of the backs, and Barry Brown bamboozled the Linwood defence when placing Addington ahead, 8-7. at the interval. HALSWELL HOLDS ON
Halswell gave notice that it would have , its. first win in eight premier meetings when it ran in eight points in the first nine
